Shipping artwork, especially pieces with glass, can feel intimidating. With the right prep, you can ship confidently knowing your item is protected from every angle.
Step 1: Choose the Right Box
Before anything else, make sure your box is large enough.
- You want at least 2 inches of space on all sides
- This allows room for protective materials
Options:
- Pre-made boxes (Amazon, Best Buy, Home Depot, OfficeMax)
- Cut-to-size boxes
Tip: I typically use large moving boxes from Walmart and cut them down to size since I keep them on hand.
Step 2: Tape the Glass (If Applicable)
If your frame has glass:
- Use masking tape to create an “X” across the glass
This helps reduce shattering and keeps glass from shifting if broken.
Step 3: Add a Protective Wrap Layer
- Wrap the entire piece with clear plastic wrap
This adds a barrier between materials and protects the frame from scuffs and scratches.
Step 4: Protect the Frame with Pool Noodles
- Cut pool noodles to the length of each side
- Slice them lengthwise to open them
- Place them around all edges of the frame
This creates a shock-absorbing border around your piece.
Optional: Use masking tape to secure them in place.
Step 5: Add Glass Protection Support
- Cut smaller sections of pool noodles
- Place them across the front (glass side)
This ensures that if pressure is applied to the box, nothing directly touches the glass.
Step 6: Place Inside the Box
When placed correctly:
- The only thing touching the box should be the pool noodles
- The artwork itself should be fully suspended and protected
Step 7: Fill Empty Space (Do Not Overstuff)
Before sealing:
- Use packing paper to fill all empty space
- Gently shake the box to make sure nothing moves
Do not overfill. You do not want the box bulging. The item still needs a small amount of breathing room.
Final Step: Seal the Box Securely
- Tape the box well on both the top and bottom
- Reinforce edges if needed
Final Thought
The goal is not just to pack the item.
The goal is for it to arrive exactly how you sent it.
With this method, your artwork is cushioned, supported, and protected from both impact and pressure during transit.
