Does the Whatnot Promote Feature Actually Work? (An Honest Breakdown)

Does the Whatnot Promote Feature Actually Work? (An Honest Breakdown)

If you’re a newer seller, you’ve probably seen it.

That little “Promote” button during your show.
The subtle nudge.
The suggestion that boosting your show could bring in more viewers.

So the real question is:

Does it actually work?

The honest answer is:
It can.
But only if it’s working for you, not against you.

My Personal Experience

When I first started selling, I used the promote feature during my first 4–5 full shows.

It felt like the right move while I was building momentum.

Even now, once in a while, especially if there’s a big raid train happening during my show and my room isn’t reaching enough people, I will turn on promotion.

I’m not against the feature.

But I am very cautious with it.

Because promotion is a tool. Not a guarantee.

How the Promote Feature Works

When you promote your show:

• You pay from your Whatnot balance
• Whatnot pushes your show to more potential viewers
• You can see how many people are entering because of the promotion
• You can monitor how much you’ve spent in real time
• You can stop it mid-show

That last part is important.

You are not locked in.

If you click the promote button during your show, you can see exactly how much the promotion has cost you so far.

You can turn it off at any time.

The Big “If”

Promotion is only worth it if it’s making you more than it’s costing you.

That’s it.

If you’re spending $25 promoting your show but only making $10 from those new viewers, it’s working against you.

If you’re spending $15 and making $150 from new buyers that entered through promotion, that’s different.

You have to treat it like an investment.

Not a magic button.

What Is a Community Boost?

A community boost is different from a full promotion.

A community boost happens when someone in your chat chooses to boost your show for you.

• It runs in 15-minute increments
• It typically gives a noticeable bump in viewers
• It automatically stops after those 15 minutes

It’s generous. It’s supportive. It can be helpful.

But it’s short-lived.

There is also an option for sellers to run a 15-minute boost themselves.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend that route. It tends to cost more than it’s worth in most cases.

What I Suggest If You Use It

If you choose to promote your show:

• Check the promotion multiple times throughout your live
• Watch how many people are entering because of it
• Compare your sales during that window
• Make sure you’re not spending more than you’re earning

Sellers pay for promotions out of their Whatnot balance.

If you don’t have funds in your account, your balance can go negative until your shipped orders begin processing and funds start coming in.

That can sneak up on newer sellers.

When Promotion Might Make Sense

• You’re brand new and building awareness
• You’re running a highly curated themed show
• There’s heavy competition during your show
• You’re confident in your inventory and pricing
• You know your average order value

When it doesn’t make sense?

• You’re already overwhelmed
• You’re testing inventory you’re unsure about
• You’re not confident in your margins
• You haven’t dialed in your pricing yet

Promotion amplifies whatever is already happening.

If your show is strong, it can amplify that.

If your show isn’t converting yet, it can amplify the cost.

My Honest Take

The promote feature is not bad.

It’s not scammy.
It’s not evil.
It’s not magical.

It’s a tool.

Use it intentionally.
Track it.
Test it.
Turn it off if it’s not serving you.

Sustainable selling isn’t about doing everything the platform offers.

It’s about knowing when something aligns with your numbers, and when it doesn’t.
